About Delta Kappa Gamma

Our Mission

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. We honor key women educators, advance the status of women, and provide scholarships to women preparing for careers in education.

A Brief History

Founded May 11, 1929, in Austin, Texas, by a group of twelve women educators, Delta Kappa Gamma was established to recognize outstanding women in the teaching profession and to create a network for continued support and development. From that first chapter, the Society has grown into an international organization with members in 17 countries and thousands of local chapters worldwide.

Seven Purposes

  To unite women educators in the field's altruistic work

  To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education
• Purpose 3
  To advance the professional interest and position of women in education
• Purpose 4
  To initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators

  To promote the participation of women educators at all levels of educational decision-making
• Purpose 6
  To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action
• Purpose 7
  To inform the members of current economic, social, political, and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society

Programs & Initiatives

Membership

Membership is by invitation and is open to women educators who are employed in or retired from a professional education position. Members join a local chapter — like Xi Chapter — and become part of a worldwide network of supportive, like-minded professionals.
